This is a delicious, juicy, cheesy roast beef sandwich made with toasted onion rolls, tender beef simmered in broth, and plenty of melty Cheez Whiz.
Ingredients (makes 4–6 sandwiches):
- 1 package onion sandwich rolls (Great Value or similar soft rolls)
- 1–1½ lbs (450–680g) sliced roast beef (deli-style or packaged)
- 1–2 jars Cheez Whiz (original yellow cheese sauce)
- 1–2 cartons beef broth (Great Value or any good quality)
- Butter (for toasting the rolls)
- Optional seasonings: black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce
Instructions:
- Toast the buns Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add a generous amount of butter. Place the onion rolls (cut side down) in the skillet and toast until golden brown and crispy on the bottom. Remove and set aside.
- Prepare the beef In the same or a separate large skillet, pour in about 1–2 cups of beef broth and bring it to a simmer over medium heat. Add the sliced roast beef into the simmering broth. Gently toss and heat the beef for 3–5 minutes until it’s hot, tender, and has absorbed some of the flavorful broth. Use tongs to turn the beef. You can add a splash of Worcestershire or black pepper for extra flavor if desired.
- Warm the Cheez Whiz While the beef is heating, warm the Cheez Whiz in the microwave (in its jar or a bowl) for 20–30 seconds until it’s nice and pourable.
- Assemble the sandwiches
- Place a generous pile of hot beef onto the bottom half of each toasted onion roll.
- Spoon or pour a large amount of warm Cheez Whiz over the beef so it cascades down the sides.
- Top with the toasted top bun.
- Serve immediately Best enjoyed hot while the cheese is gooey and the buns are crispy. Optional sides: French fries, potato chips, or a small bowl of extra beef broth for dipping (French dip style).
Pro Tips:
- Don’t skimp on the Cheez Whiz — the more, the better for that classic cheesy pull.
- The beef broth step keeps the roast beef moist and adds great flavor.
- You can add sautéed onions or peppers if you want to make it more like a cheesesteak.
